Heirloom Treasures

Heirloom seeds come from non-hybrid (open-pollinated) varieties of vegetables. Home gardeners can save their own garden seeds from heirloom seeds (heritage seeds), as opposed to most modern (f1) hybrids which produce sterile or unreliable seeds.

The title "heirloom" is used because the seeds for many of these varieties were saved by hand for generations. Gardeners saved seeds from plants with the most desirable characteristics for their own home gardens and then passed them on to family and friends. Top on the list was flavor.

Our goal is to offer the best varieties for you to begin your own seed saving adventure. We encourage you to save seeds from the individual plants that meet your expectations, whether they be climatic, culinary or survival. Fortunately, this is not difficult nor time consuming.

You can find complete seed saving instructions for beginners and experts on the web site of ISSI, International Seed Saving Institute, the non-profit we established to teach seed saving.

We invite you rejoin the ranks of those saving their own seeds by choosing from the delicious, varieties we have selected.

We think heirloom seeds go hand in hand with organic gardening and organic farming. We are proud to add an heirloom seed catalog to the growing list of our seed catalogs.
