Tomatoes
Frost Tolerance: Supposedly none.
The most popular vegetable in the world. We are probably most famous for our trip behind the Iron Curtain in 1989 when we brought back over 60 varieties of now world famous Siberian tomatoes. Many of our varieties have performed well even thrived in the desert heat. Tomatoes are after all a plant of tropical origin. We did have some trouble with our plants setting fruit during the hottest days of summer. Some research speculates tomato pollen turns sterile at temperatures somewhere over 80° F. We now shake our tomato blossoms a little during the cool morning hours to stimulate pollenation with furtile pollen. This seems to do the trick. Determinate (Det.) varieties produce vines that grow to a predetermined size and produce all its tomatoes at the same time. Indeterminate (Ind.) varieties produce vines that keep growing. Our varieties were chosen primarily for their earliness, heat-tolerance and superior fresh-picked flavor.
