Share The Wealth

Thomas Jefferson once said the greatest service one can do for country is to introduce the seeds to a useful new plant. We highly recommend gardeners take seeds to share and trade when traveling overseas so they can return with new discoveries. To help you do this intelligently and legally, we have compiled a list of web resources listing relevant regulations. And of course, if you find any new treasures, share with us and we will be happy to reward you with your choice of one of our packets of seed.

Seed Regulations

Small packets of clean, untreated, individual varieties of seeds in properly labeled packets are always the easiest to transport across borders. We have listed below the appropriate federal and state statutes governing seed import into the United States. Generally, no United States federal statute prohibits import of seeds unless the variety is listed as a noxious weed. However, plants, cuttings and roots are prohibited without special permission as is any form of dirt or soil.

United States Seed Law

Find a complete updated version of the US law governing seeds (US CODE, TITLE 7 AGRICULTURE, CHAPTER 37 SEEDS) at this Cornell University Web Site.

Federal and State Noxious Weeds

Noxious weeds are plants that have been determined to cause economic damage to agriculture or the environment. Most states compile official lists of noxious weeds and restrict or ban their import. In this GRIN data base you will find the state and federal lists of noxious weeds along with the ability to search for different varieties. Official lists vary from state to state, but here you can check to see if any plant is on any list. Please check before asking to be sent questionable seeds into your state.
