Long Time, No Talk…

Hey there seed friends! It has been a couple months since we last touched base, we have been out and about living life and catching our breath after a busy seed sales season this spring.

We have some exciting projects in the works and can’t wait to jump into strategic planning this month. We have a few field trips planned to check in on some Seeds Trust growers and some big projects in the works!

In order to guide our upcoming planning for future growth of the business, it would mean to world to us if you could take a quick minute to fill out our customer feedback survey.

Pollinator Week Fun

This June we were honored to be included in Pollinator Week festivities put on by Chris Starkus at Urban Farmer Denver at the Oxford Hotel. It was a week full of specialty menu items and fun pollinator themed activities, to include a beautiful new mural half a block from Union Station (in between the Oxford and Amante Coffee on 17th). The mural is an ode to the wildflowers our pollinator friends love the most.

Did you know that Urban Farmer buys a pollinator seed mix from Seeds Trust and gives it out at the restaurant and events to promote pollinator gardens? Chef Starkus is a true advocate for biodiversity and natural food systems.

Go check out the final product and grab a drink or bite from Urban Farmer! Their sourcing is fantastic and it is a great spot for a swanky downtown Denver date night.

Gardening Woes & Success Stories

We’re not going to lie, it has been a rough season for Colorado Front Range gardeners. After a cold and rainy June, we got hit with multiple hail storms across the metro Denver area, and it has taken a while for plants to bounce back.

We just wanted to send a little note of encouragement to our tomato enthusiasts out there. Hang tight, be patient, and if you had to replant - fingers crossed for a long, late fall…

Here are some pics of a few of our varieties - it isn’t the prettiest tomato crop year, but we suspect the seeds saved from those that fight it out will be even more resilient!

Soon enough they will be nice and ripe…

Success Story - Tower Gardening!

Sometimes, one way to avoid the stress of climate fluctuations on your more delicate plants is to go with container gardening or hydroponics.

Have you ever tried growing with these methods? They each have their pros and cons, but they can be a great way for those in tight spaces or high altitude environments to extend their growing capacity.

Check out the awesome success from one of our customers using a hydroponic tower garden system. What beautiful greens!

Yes, Seeds Trust varieties will do well in hydroponic set-ups and we are working on creating a Container Garden Collection for the upcoming season.

Harvest Time and Seed Saving

Drink it in, it’s the time of year when much of your hard work pays off. While here in Colorado things are a bit delayed, enjoy the fruits of your labor!

That being said, as plants begin to mature it is time to think about putting up the harvest and saving seeds! Be sure to do some research on how you can put some of your fresh herbs and veggies up for the winter months. Invest in some good mason jars and a solid dehydrator and get experimenting!

Not sure where to start with seed saving? Grab your copy of our founder and friend’s handy booklet “Basic Seed Saving” today! It is a fantastic resource with quick info so you can start experimenting with seed saving in your own back yard.

Worried you missed out on saving seed for cool season crops? It isn’t too late to plant seeds this month to harvest in early/late fall season before the hard frosts come. Depending on where you are located and your altitude, there may be much more harvesting available to you with a fall succession crop…

Whether you are itching for some more fresh greens, wanting to stock up your winter soup pantry, or aspiring to plant for some cool season seed saving, there are still plenty of seeds to put in the ground!

Beets - check out our Early Wonder Tall Tops - 48 days to maturity

Watercress - Curly Cress variety matures in just 30 days

Kale - our Dwarf Siberian Kale is hearty and a great winter garden addition!

Leeks - plant some frost hardy King Richard leeks for some tasty soups…

Green Onions - Evergreen Hardy bunching onions - survives even in snow!

Pak Choi - 50 days to maturity and cold tolerant Pak Choi is delicious

Radish - French Breakfast radish mature in just 25 days

Spinach - Bloomsdale Long Standing matures in 42 days for fall harvest salads

Swiss Chard -plant Fordhook Giant and have greens well into the frosty months

Turnips - White Egg Japanese turnips will boost your winter meal plan for sure!
